A Young Fighter’s Journey: Kale’s Battle with Cancer

This is the inspiring story of Kale, a young boy who faced the daunting challenges of bilateral Wilms Tumor and non-Hodgkin’s Burkitt’s lymphoma. His journey, marked by resilience and the unwavering support of his family and the medical team at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, highlights the incredible strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. This account details Kale’s diagnosis, treatment, and the profound impact of the care he received, offering a testament to hope and perseverance.

The Unfolding Diagnosis

Kale’s health journey began on June 18, 2015, when he was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics’ Emergency Room. The family had been alerted by a local doctor that Kale had been passing blood in his urine, prompting an ultrasound of his kidneys the previous day. The results were concerning: tumors were detected in Kale’s left kidney. Further tests, including a CT scan with contrast, were scheduled. However, during the CT scan, radiologists determined that the contrast could not be administered due to Kale’s compromised kidney function, and he was immediately directed to the emergency room.

Navigating Acute Care and Bilateral Wilms Tumor

In Iowa City, Kale underwent a series of tests and consultations. That evening, he was admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Kale was experiencing acute renal failure in addition to the presence of tumors. The following day, after extensive testing, doctors confirmed the diagnosis of bilateral Wilms Tumor. Kale commenced dialysis immediately to manage his kidney failure.

Treatment and a Glimmer of Hope

On June 22, Kale underwent surgery to have a port and a permanent dialysis catheter placed. Shortly after, he received his first dose of chemotherapy. His time at the hospital was a rollercoaster of “ups and downs,” but Kale proved to be a fighter. Later that summer, he had his catheter removed, and a significant development occurred: his kidney function began to recover. On August 20, Kale was discharged, and the family was able to return home.

A New Battle: Non-Hodgkin’s Burkitt’s Lymphoma

Unfortunately, the respite at home was short-lived. On Sunday, August 22, Kale was rushed back to the UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital by ambulance. By September 12, new symptoms emerged, leading to his re-admission to the PICU for close monitoring. After two nights in the PICU, he was moved back to 3JCE, which the family described as “his second home.” On September 18, a new diagnosis was made: non-Hodgkin’s Burkitt’s lymphoma. Kale has been undergoing treatment for this condition ever since.

The Healing Environment at UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital

Throughout Kale’s challenging ordeal, the entire staff at UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital provided exceptional care and support. The family expressed deep gratitude for the “amazing” staff across the PICU, 3JCE, and all the doctors, techs, and assistants they encountered. They found the staff to be welcoming, comforting, and always willing to address their questions and concerns with thoroughness and dedication.

The Child Life program was particularly invaluable, offering activities that kept Kale engaged and distracted during procedures, providing much-needed breaks for the family, and ensuring his education continued with an on-staff teacher. The level of care Kale received was consistently described as “absolutely amazing,” with the care team diligently finding answers to every question. The hospital environment, with its array of activities and the evident passion of its staff, created a space conducive to healing and resilience.

Kale’s story is a powerful reminder of the strength found in the face of childhood illness and the critical role of dedicated medical care and family support. His fight continues, a beacon of hope for others facing similar battles.
