Physical Description and Appearance

Size (Length): 0.75 in – 46 ft (1.6–140 cm)

The smallest known squid is the Southern pygmy squid, measuring just 0.75 inches, while the colossal squid dwarfs it entirely, reaching lengths of around 46 feet.

Weight: 0.02 oz – 1,100 pounds (0.566 g – 500 kg)

Body and Coloration: Squids have a soft, elongated, tube-shaped body known as a mantle, which ends in a flattened head. Two large eyes sit on either side of the head, granting the animal an almost 360-degree field of vision.

On the underside of the body are eight arms and two much longer, retractile tentacles surrounding the mouth. All ten appendages—arms and tentacles alike—are lined with disc-shaped suckers, and some even feature hooks for a firmer grip on prey.

Most of the squid’s body mass is contained within the mantle, which has a swimming fin running along each side, although these fins are not the primary means of locomotion for most species. Two feathery white gills sit within the mantle cavity.

Coloration varies widely, ranging from sandy brown to vivid red, and can even ripple with metallic rainbow hues thanks to specialized color-changing cells called chromatophores.

After mating, both the male and female typically die shortly afterward.

Life Cycle

Baby squids hatch after four to eight weeks, emerging as miniature versions of their parents. They feed on tiny organisms called plankton as they grow toward adulthood. Much less is known about the life cycle of deep-water squid species due to the challenges of studying them in their remote habitat.
