Javicia Leslie has rapidly become a familiar face on television screens over the past half-decade, showcasing her talent in a diverse range of roles. Many first encountered her as the sister of the lead character in the clever, albeit short-lived, God Friended Me. Her career also includes a significant five-season arc on the popular BET series The Family Business and a starring turn as the second Batwoman in The CW’s Arrowverse, taking over the mantle after Ruby Rose’s departure. She even made appearances in high-profile episodes of The Flash. Now, Leslie is stepping into another compelling role as Daphne, a sharp-witted detective in the anticipated ABC series High Potential, starring alongside Kaitlin Olson, Daniel Sunjata, and Judy Reyes. In the show, Daphne forms an unlikely but effective crime-fighting partnership with Morgan (Olson), the squad’s cleaning woman, whose exceptional intellect and photographic memory make her an invaluable asset.
A Natural Fit for a Strong Role
Leslie was drawn to the script for High Potential due to its alignment with the strong, protective, and powerful characters she has consistently portrayed. “Daphne is very much in alignment with that, being a detective, being a person who wants to help people and save others,” Leslie explained. “It is just very connected to, honestly, like my last five or six roles. I just felt like it was meant to be.”
The series centers on a team of Major Crimes detectives. The first episode sets the stage as they investigate a case, believing they have identified their suspect. However, Morgan, the cleaning lady for their office, possesses a remarkable intellect with an IQ of 160. She notices clues and details the detectives missed, ultimately revealing that their initial suspect was, in fact, a victim. This discovery opens the detectives’ eyes to the limitations of their own perspectives. Leslie describes her character, Daphne, as “super, super hardworking, dedicated to my job, somewhat of an overachiever.” She immediately connected with Morgan’s character and anticipates a strong companionship developing throughout the season as they solve unique cases with Morgan’s assistance.
Collaborative Dynamics and Tonal Balance
Even in the early stages of the series, the budding dynamic between Daphne and Morgan is evident. Leslie notes that Daphne, despite her dedication and admiration for her by-the-book superior Karadec (Daniel Sunjata), is more open to Morgan’s unconventional methods than some of her colleagues. “I think seeing her come in with such a unique perspective lightens me up and allows me to be able to see things differently,” Leslie shared. As the season progresses, Daphne increasingly begins to perceive things through Morgan’s unique lens.
Working with Kaitlin Olson, known for her comedic background, has been a source of joy for Leslie. She finds the balance between the dramatic stakes of the cases and the inherent humor in the show incredibly rewarding. “Every time we do a new role, it gives us a new opportunity to play in a way that maybe we haven’t played before,” Leslie stated. She emphasized the production’s commitment to ensuring the cases are taken seriously, even amidst lighter, funnier moments. The entire cast, including Daniel Sunjata, Judy Reyes, and Taran Killam, creates a vibrant and enjoyable work environment, making it challenging at times to maintain composure during takes due to their comedic genius.
Personal Connections and Aspirations
Leslie finds that her love for leadership and taking charge resonates strongly with Daphne’s character. A more challenging aspect for her as an actor has been mastering the technicalities of being a detective, such as quickly applying handcuffs. However, she views these challenges as opportunities to acquire new skills.
Looking ahead, Leslie hopes to explore storylines that delve into the unique perspective of a Black female cop in Los Angeles, acknowledging the often-strained relationship between the Black community and law enforcement. She sees Daphne as a brave individual committed to protecting and serving, aiming to be an example that demonstrates solidarity and care.
Leslie recalled a college acquaintance with an extraordinary ability to recall the day of the week for any given date, highlighting that individuals with exceptional cognitive skills do exist.
A Long-Standing Commitment to “The Family Business”
Beyond High Potential, Leslie reflects on her extensive involvement with The Family Business. She describes the cast as a true family, deeply invested in the project, with their input and ideas valued due to their long-standing familiarity with their characters since filming began in 2018. The show’s melodramatic, soap-opera-esque nature allows for extreme emotional expression, offering a creative outlet that Leslie cherishes. She is confident that the show, which gained significant traction on Netflix, will be renewed for a sixth season.
Stepping into the Batsuit and Beyond
Taking on the role of Batwoman involved a significant shift, but Leslie felt well-supported by showrunner Caroline Dries, who aimed to reimagine the character. Leslie acknowledged the potential fan apprehension with a lead character change but felt the existing cast and Dries’s support helped ease the transition. By the third season, the show embraced fan-favorite characters from the Batman universe, a prospect Leslie, a self-proclaimed Batman fan, found exhilarating.
Her appearances in The Flash further cemented her presence in the superhero genre. Leslie recognized the immense power of the superhero fan base, noting how even a few episodes can create lasting recognition. She appreciated being part of a community that deeply values these characters.
Leslie holds God Friended Me in high regard, cherishing the strong bonds formed with the cast. It represented a significant early role for many of them, and she credits the show’s creators, directors, and producers for fostering a supportive environment in New York. Working with veteran actor Joe Morton on that show was akin to “theater boot camp,” providing an invaluable start to her career.
Philanthropy and Passion for Animals
Beyond acting, Leslie is dedicated to philanthropy through her foundation, the Chandler Foundation. Inspired by her upbringing in Prince George’s County, Maryland, she aims to provide underserved public school students with essential sports equipment and educational materials. Her efforts have extended to Los Angeles, donating equipment like basketballs and footballs, and she also organized a back-to-school drive in her hometown, distributing backpacks and offering free haircuts and braiding services. She further involved the local police department in these community events to foster positive relationships.
Leslie also has a profound love for animals, particularly dogs. She actively supports animal adoption agencies, advocating for adoption over purchasing from breeders due to the issue of pet overpopulation. Stories of rescued and re-homed animals deeply resonate with her.
Authenticity and Strength in Character
Leslie believes she is quite open, and with her dedicated fans, there might not be many surprising revelations. She hopes her body of work will be remembered for portraying characters with both strength and vulnerability, characters who, despite their flaws, possess relatable depth. She is particularly drawn to these complex characters and aspires to take on more action-oriented roles, having enjoyed her experience in the action film Double Life.
Clearing up a common misconception, Leslie humorously points out that fans often confuse her role as Batwoman with Catwoman.
