What Is a Hill? Understanding This Common Landform

Have you ever stood on a small rise and enjoyed a wider view of the land around you? That gentle bump in the landscape is called a hill, and it’s one of the most common landforms on Earth. A hill is a piece of land that rises higher than everything surrounding it, and while it may seem like a simple feature, hills tell a fascinating story about geology, human history, and the natural forces that shape our planet. This article explores what makes a hill different from a mountain, how hills form, and why humans have been drawn to them for thousands of years.

Hill vs. Mountain: What’s the Difference?

Hills and mountains look similar in many ways. Both usually have a summit, or highest point, and both offer good vantage points for viewing the surrounding landscape. Because hills are less steep and not as tall as mountains, they tend to be much easier to climb.

Interestingly, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, there is no official scientific distinction between a hill and a mountain. At one point, both the United Kingdom and the United States defined hills as summits under 1,000 feet, but both countries dropped that rule in the mid-twentieth century. Today, the line between a “hill” and a “mountain” is more about tradition and local naming than strict geological measurement.

Man-Made Hills: The Mounds of North America

Not all hills are shaped purely by nature. Sometimes, a hill is constructed by people, and this type of formation is known as a mound. In the eastern woodlands region of North America, a network of Native American communities known as the Hopewell people built enormous earthen mounds, which is why they are often referred to as the Mound Builders. Some of the best-preserved examples can be found at Hopewell Culture National Historical Park in Ohio, USA.

The Hopewell people built mounds shaped like animals and geometric figures, some reaching about 9 meters (30 feet) tall and as wide as 305 meters (1,000 feet). Researchers are still not entirely certain what purpose these mounds served — some may have been burial sites for important figures, while others may have functioned as astronomical observatories used to track celestial events.

How Natural Hills Are Formed

Natural hills form through ongoing geologic activity, and one major process is faulting. This occurs because tectonic plates beneath the Earth’s surface are constantly shifting, gradually reshaping the landscape above. Hills created by faulting can, over enormous stretches of time, grow into full mountain ranges. The Himalayas in Asia — the tallest mountain range on Earth — actually began as small hills and continue to rise today because of faulting activity deep underground.

Hills are also formed through deposition, which happens when eroded rock, sand, and soil are carried away by wind or water and accumulate in a new location. Meanwhile, erosion itself can wear existing hills down over time as wind and water strip away material — and in some cases, a once-towering mountain can gradually be reduced to a hill.

A clear real-world example comes from the U.S. state of Indiana. While northern Indiana is nearly flat, southern Indiana is full of hills. Geologists have found that during the Ice Age, massive glaciers flattened the northern landscape as they advanced like giant steamrollers. As the glaciers melted near the middle of the state, the rushing meltwater carved out the rugged, hilly terrain seen in southern Indiana today.

Types of Hills

Hills come in several distinct forms:

  • Drumlin – a long hill shaped by the movement of glaciers
  • Butte – a steep-sided hill with a flat top, usually standing alone on a flat plain after surrounding material eroded away
  • Tor – a rock formation sitting atop a hill (in the United Kingdom, the term can also describe the hill itself)
  • Volcanic hill – a cone-shaped hill formed by volcanic activity
  • Pingo – a mound of ice covered by earth, typically found in the Arctic and Antarctica

Why Humans Have Always Loved Hills

For thousands of years, people have chosen hills as places to build homes and settlements. The elevated position helps avoid flooding and offers a natural defensive advantage, since higher ground makes it easier to spot approaching danger. Rome, famously built across seven hills, allowed its early inhabitants to see invading armies from a distance — a strategic advantage that helped shape the city’s long history.
