Top Solo Board Games: 2024 Update and Recommendations

Kingdom Legacy

As board game enthusiasts, the allure of diving into a rich, engaging experience alone is undeniable. Following up on the success of last year’s recommendations, this updated guide explores new solo board game gems and revisits some enduring classics that have graced my table over the past 12 months. While the 2023 list remains a strong resource, this year’s selection leans towards games with a bit more complexity, offering deeper strategic challenges for dedicated players. Whether you’re seeking a quick solo session or a lengthy campaign, this list provides a curated selection of games designed to captivate and fulfill the solo gamer’s desire for an immersive experience.

The Challengers: Recently Released Solo Games That Shine

This section highlights newer releases that have particularly impressed with their solo modes. These are games I’ve found myself returning to repeatedly, eager for another playthrough even with a backlog of other titles.

Kingdom Legacy: Feudal Kingdom stands out as a remarkable solo experience for its value. This compact card game offers a compelling “legacy” style narrative through resource management and card upgrades, allowing players to develop their own kingdom. From transforming grasslands into fields to evolving humble houses into mighty fortresses, it provides a substantial solo experience typically lasting 3-4 hours per session. While the legacy elements are subtle, primarily involving sticker additions and easily replicable through workarounds, the game shines as a high-score challenge. Its AI-generated art is visually stunning, though it may deter some potential buyers. Despite this, it’s a small package delivering a great game, with an expansion already announced.

I, Napoleon is a recent addition that has quickly become a favorite. This solo-only game immerses players in the life of Napoleon Bonaparte through a dynamic, evolving deck. It begins with a simplified “commander” phase focused on gaining fame, progressing to first consul and then emperor, introducing diplomacy and domestic politics. The gameplay is highly abstracted and streamlined, creating an app-like feel where small, individual decisions have long-term consequences. While the decision space isn’t overwhelmingly deep, the engaging experience and the subtle nudges towards favorable outcomes make it incredibly enjoyable. A biography of Napoleon is a recommended companion purchase.

The Anno 1800 – Die Erweiterung expansion significantly enhances the base game’s already excellent gameplay. It introduces more meaningful turns, greater agency, and makes previously niche purple technologies more viable. A 6-chapter solo campaign culminates in a sandbox mode, building upon the mechanisms of the original solo campaign. While an English release is uncertain, many players source German copies due to their affordability and largely language-independent nature. This expansion injects fresh challenges and replayability into the already robust Anno 1800 experience.

Sky Team, a 2-player cooperative game with no communication, offers a thrilling challenge that can be adapted for solo play with fan-made variants. Players work together to land an airplane, avoiding numerous perils like overshooting the runway or running out of fuel. The game’s replayability is high, thanks to a variety of airports and modules included in its compact box. It’s considered one of the standout winners of the “Spiel des Jahres” award in recent years.

Evacuation by Vladimir Suchy provides a unique thematic experience where players must evacuate a population to a new world, forcing them to dismantle their existing economy. The game features a tightly balanced economy, tech tiles, and a straightforward card-based automa that interferes with player actions. Compared to Suchy’s previous title, Woodcraft, Evacuation offers more sustained engagement.

Heat: Pedal to the Metal – Heavy Rain continues to impress as a top-tier racing game. Its blend of base-game variety, quick turns, and cinematic feel makes it a standout. The expansion adds further variety, championship customization options, and enhances the already brilliant Legends solo-automa system.

Barcelona, released in 2023, offers a captivating Euro-style, point-salad game focused on constructing the l’eixample district. While the automa may be simpler than the multiplayer experience, the clever action-selection mechanism and engaging theme make it a highly enjoyable puzzle. An upcoming expansion promises further content.

Hegemony is described as an “RPG for euro gamers,” offering a deep dive into political and economic strategy. While its considerable playtime can limit solo sessions, it provides a rich, thematic experience where players embody different classes and navigate complex societal dynamics.

Inventions: Evolution of Ideas presents a solid solo mode, featuring two distinct automa that challenge the player. Although the theme could be more robustly integrated, the core gameplay of proposing, inventing, and spreading ideas is compelling. The solo mode offers score-chasing potential, though it may lack the long-term hook for some players after initial exploration.

Oldy but Goody: Discovering Older Gems for Solo Play

The latter half of 2023 and into 2024 saw a shift towards exploring more established board games, offering the advantage of readily available reviews and pre-owned copies. While many older titles lack dedicated solo modes, several exceptions stand out.

Iwari Deluxe surprised with its engaging solo gameplay. Based on classic designs like Web of Power, this edition comes with numerous maps that provide significant variety. Although the solo automa is somewhat basic and loses its challenge once mastered, the game’s simple rules, attractive presentation, and map diversity make it a quick and enjoyable solo area control experience, typically lasting 20-30 minutes. It’s important to note edition differences, as some retail versions include fewer maps. The core mechanic of balancing area majority with totem building and inter-region connections creates compelling strategic dilemmas.

Pandemic – Rising Tide elevates the familiar Pandemic formula with an improved theme, a more dynamic flooding mechanism, and additional objectives like pump construction. This iteration is so well-realized that it has led to the sale of the base game and other expansions. While not featuring a dedicated solo mode, it plays exceptionally well as a two-handed cooperative game, offering a fresh challenge for those who have exhausted the original Pandemic.

Staying Strong: Perennial Favorites for Solo Gamers

These classic titles continue to be reliable favorites, consistently finding their way back to the table for solo sessions.

Horseless Carriage, a complex spatial puzzler from Splotter, remains a go-to solo game. Its fan-designed solo mode, complete with an app version, enhances its accessibility. Players compete against automa by building the most efficient factory to meet fluctuating market demands, with factory space being the sole, crucial resource. The game masterfully balances market manipulation with strategic factory layout, providing a deeply engaging puzzle.

John Company: Second Edition is an exceptional choice for those seeking a lengthy, immersive experience. Ricky Royal’s solo mode brilliantly captures the essence of a negotiation game. Players guide a family vying for power within the East India Company, aiming to enrich themselves while navigating the historical context with respect. Despite its extensive ruleset and playtime, John Company offers a unique and thought-provoking solo adventure.

Concordia Solitaria continues to be a strong solo expansion, particularly enjoyable with its various map expansions like Sicilia, Italy, and Ballearica. While the core automa remains consistent, the addition of new maps keeps the experience fresh. The hope for a legacy campaign or more dynamic automa attributes persists, aiming to further enhance its replayability.

Games I Wished I Had Played

Despite a robust collection, certain solo-able games have yet to hit the table in the past year. The following titles remain in my collection, with the hope of finding time for them soon: Dune Imperium, Grand Austria Hotel, Kanban EV, The Colonists, and Sleeping Gods.

This Year’s Not-For-Me

As with previous years, some solo modes, when tried, did not resonate. The primary challenges identified are solo modes that fail to capture the multiplayer experience’s essence or those that offer initial excitement but lack long-term engagement factors. The development of simple solo campaigns or interchangeable automa attributes, as seen in Maracaibo, would greatly benefit many games. Fortunately, the thriving community of fan-designers continues to bridge this gap. Upcoming titles like Rise & Fall, Trailblazers, and Escape Plan are anticipated for their solo modes. This list aims to inspire your next solo board game adventure, and your own recommendations are eagerly awaited in the comments.
