Firehouse Pet Shop House Rules and Skunk Policy

Welcome to Firehouse Pet Shop! To ensure a safe, enjoyable, and clean environment for all our furry clients and their human companions, we have established the following house rules. Adherence to these guidelines helps us provide the best possible experience for everyone.

General House Rules

  • Vaccinations: Firehouse Pet Shop requires that all pets entering our facilities be up-to-date on their vaccinations. This is crucial for the health and safety of all animals.
  • Flea Infestations: Pets with flea infestations must be treated prior to entering our facilities. If you discover your pet has fleas while using our services, please notify an employee immediately so we can properly address any pest issues.
  • Leash Policy: All dogs must be kept on a leash and under the control of an adult at all times while within our premises.
  • Unattended Pets: Pets must never be left unattended within our facilities.
  • Grooming Restrictions: Clipping or grooming services are not permitted within the facility.
  • Behavioral Considerations: For the safety of all our clients, dogs exhibiting disruptive or aggressive behavior may be asked to leave at the management’s discretion. We recommend booking a specialized reactive pet appointment if your dog has such tendencies.
  • Children’s Supervision: Children aged 16 and younger must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or responsible adult at all times.
  • Time Management: To ensure we can accommodate all customers’ needs, please be mindful of the time, especially when others are waiting to use the Spa facilities.

Important Skunk Policy

Skunk spray can be a significant issue for both dogs and humans due to the thiols present in the secretion. These compounds can lead to symptoms such as ocular swelling and redness, sneezing, vomiting, and general discomfort. To maintain a pleasant and safe environment for everyone, we request that customers with skunked pets treat their animals prior to bringing them in for a bath.

At-Home Skunk Remedy

We recommend the following at-home skunk remedy, or one of the specialized products available in our store. It is best to treat your pet while their coat is dry to prevent spreading the skunk oils.

Ingredients:

  • 1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
  • 1/4 cup of baking soda
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons of liquid dish soap
  • 1 quart tepid water (adjust quantity for larger pets)

Instructions:

  1. In a plastic bucket, carefully mix the hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and liquid dish soap.
  2. Add the tepid water and stir gently.
  3. Promptly and thoroughly apply the solution to the affected areas on your pet, working it deep into the fur.
  4. Allow the solution to sit for approximately 5 minutes, or until the odor is gone. Heavily affected areas may require a “rinse and repeat” washing.
  5. Crucially, keep the solution away from your pet’s eyes, as it can cause severe irritation or injury.
  6. After treatment, thoroughly rinse your pet with tepid tap water.
  7. IMMEDIATELY pour the unused solution down the drain with running water.
  8. NEVER store the mixed solution in a closed container. The build-up of pressure can cause the container to burst, leading to severe injury.
  9. Proceed with your pet’s regular bath.

If you are unable to treat your pet at home, please bring them in at least two hours before closing time. This will help limit the exposure of the odor to other customers and pets.
