Polestar 5: Flagship Electric Sedan Blends Design, Technology, and Performance

Polestar is set to redefine the electric luxury sedan segment with the upcoming Polestar 5, a four-door fastback poised to deliver supercar-level power and cutting-edge technology. Building on the sleek Precept concept unveiled in February 2020, the production version of the Polestar 5 promises a striking design, advanced features, and exhilarating performance for the discerning driver. The Polestar 4 demonstrates the brand’s commitment to innovative design, and the Polestar 5 continues this ethos.

The Polestar 5’s exterior design remains remarkably faithful to the Precept concept, featuring clean, smooth lines that establish its identity within the Polestar family. Minor adjustments have been made, including a revised front end, the introduction of conventional door mirrors, and the addition of rear-hinged rear doors. Gone is the prominent sensor pod above the windshield, but the overall aesthetic is one of sophisticated minimalism that turns heads.

One of the most distinctive design elements, and a continuation from the Precept, is the absence of a traditional rear window. This design choice, also seen on the Polestar 4, is a deliberate move to enhance rear passenger space. Instead of a physical window, a high-definition camera relays rearward views to a digital rearview mirror, while a long, six-foot glass roof panel floods the cabin with natural light.

A Driver-Centric Interior with Advanced Safety

Inside, the Polestar 5 prioritizes both driver engagement and passenger comfort. “Foot garages,” innovative cut-outs within the battery pack, contribute to a more spacious rear seating area than the sloping roofline might suggest. Front occupants can opt for Recaro seats upholstered in either MicroTech or premium leather. The driver is greeted by a 9-inch instrument cluster and a 9.5-inch head-up display, complemented by a 14.5-inch touchscreen that controls the Android-powered infotainment system.

Polestar’s heritage, stemming from Volvo, is evident in the comprehensive suite of safety and driver-assistance technologies. The Polestar 5 is equipped with 11 vision cameras, a driver monitoring camera, a mid-range radar, and 12 ultrasonic sensors. These systems collectively power features like the Pilot Assist, which can regulate speed and lane positioning up to 93 mph. Furthermore, interior radars are designed to detect occupants, ensuring optimal safety in the event of a collision.

Electrifying Performance: Dual Motor and Performance Variants

At launch, the Polestar 5 will be available in two variants: Dual Motor and Performance. Both models are built upon an 800-volt electrical architecture and feature a 112-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack capable of 350-kilowatt fast charging.

The Dual Motor variant delivers a potent 748 horsepower and 599 pound-feet of torque, enabling a 0-to-60 mph acceleration time of 3.8 seconds. For those seeking even greater exhilaration, the Performance variant boosts output to 884 horsepower and 749 pound-feet of torque, achieving the same benchmark sprint in a mere 3.1 seconds. This impressive performance is further supported by standard Brembo brakes, with gold calipers adorning the Performance model. The Performance variant also features a BWI MagneRide adaptive damping system for enhanced ride and handling.

Innovative Platform and Future Outlook

The Polestar 5 is constructed on a new, bonded-aluminum platform known as the Polestar Performance Architecture (PPA). While aluminum construction is more costly, it offers significant advantages in weight reduction and structural rigidity. Polestar claims the 5 boasts higher torsional rigidity than many supercars. Specific weight figures for the production model have yet to be released.

Details regarding pricing and availability for the American market will be announced at a later date. However, the Polestar 5’s combination of avant-garde design, advanced technology, and formidable electric performance positions it as a compelling contender in the premium EV space.
