NSAID and Anti-Inflammatory Poisoning in Dogs: What Every Owner Should Know

Reaching for a painkiller when your dog seems sore or feverish is a natural instinct—but it can be one of the most dangerous mistakes a pet owner makes. Anti-inflammatory poisoning in dogs is one of the most common toxic emergencies seen in veterinary practice, and it often happens because well-meaning owners give their dog a human medication, or too much of a pet-specific one. Understanding the risks of NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) is essential for keeping your dog safe.

Many anti-inflammatories that are perfectly safe for people are highly toxic to dogs, even in small amounts. Common culprits include ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin. Even medications formulated specifically for dogs—such as meloxicam, carprofen, firocoxib, or robenacoxib—can cause serious harm if given above the recommended dose. In some cases, as little as two to three times the normal dose is enough to trigger severe complications. How Anti-Inflammatory Drugs Harm Dogs

NSAIDs work by blocking the production of prostaglandins, substances in the body responsible for inflammation, swelling, and fever. While this reduces pain and discomfort, prostaglandins also play a protective role in several organs. When their production is suppressed too much, the stomach lining, intestines, kidneys, liver, and even the brain can be damaged. Anti-inflammatory intoxication is a common presentation in veterinary emergency clinics, and prompt treatment is critical to limiting long-term harm. Symptoms often begin within hours of ingestion, though the full extent of organ damage may not become clear for several days.

Recognising the Symptoms of Poisoning

Dogs suffering from NSAID toxicity can show a wide range of symptoms, including:

  • Vomiting, sometimes containing blood
  • Loss of appetite and low energy
  • Diarrhoea, including black or tarry stools
  • Increased thirst and urination
  • Pale or yellow-tinged (jaundiced) gums
  • Poor coordination or difficulty moving
  • Seizures or collapse in severe cases

Which Dogs Are Most at Risk?

Smaller dogs are particularly vulnerable, since it takes a much smaller quantity of medication to reach a toxic dose relative to their body weight. Risk also rises significantly if a dog is taking other medications at the same time, especially steroids or additional anti-inflammatory drugs. Dogs with pre-existing stomach, intestinal, kidney, liver, or heart conditions tend to experience more severe reactions, as do very young puppies and older dogs whose organs may already be under strain.

Diagnosing NSAID Toxicity

There isn’t a simple test that confirms anti-inflammatory poisoning directly. Instead, veterinarians rely on a combination of known or suspected ingestion and the symptoms a dog is showing. Routine blood work can reveal early signs of kidney and liver stress and helps track how the condition progresses over time. If ulcers in the stomach or intestines are suspected, further investigation using ultrasound imaging or endoscopy may be recommended to assess the extent of damage.

How Vets Treat Poisoned Dogs

Treatment focuses first on preventing further absorption of the drug. Vets aim to empty the stomach as quickly as possible—ideally within 30 to 90 minutes of ingestion—either through inducing vomiting or by flushing the stomach under anaesthesia. Activated charcoal is then typically administered, as it binds to the remaining drug in the gut and stops it from entering the bloodstream; this may need to be repeated every four to six hours depending on the substance involved.

Many dogs require one to three days of hospitalisation, with intravenous fluids given to protect kidney function and support the body’s natural elimination processes. Medications to protect the stomach lining, such as antacids, are commonly used alongside anti-nausea treatments. Misoprostol, a drug that specifically shields the stomach from NSAID-related damage, may also be prescribed. In cases with significant internal bleeding, blood transfusions can become necessary, and a small number of specialist referral centres offer advanced techniques like plasma exchange to remove the toxin directly from the blood.

What You Can Do at Home

If you believe your dog has swallowed a human anti-inflammatory, or received too high a dose of their prescribed medication, contact a vet straight away rather than attempting to manage it yourself. Most cases require urgent, in-clinic care. Dogs that survive a serious poisoning episode may face a lengthy recovery and could be left with permanent kidney damage, sometimes requiring a special diet or long-term supportive treatment afterward.

Preventing Anti-Inflammatory Poisoning

  • Store all medications securely, well out of reach of pets—even those that don’t smell or look appetising to you.
  • Never give your dog any medication, human or veterinary, without first checking with a vet, and follow dosing instructions precisely.
  • Take extra care when giving medicine hidden in food if you have multiple pets in the household, to avoid accidental cross-ingestion.

When to Seek Emergency Help

Speak to a vet immediately if your dog is vomiting, refusing food, drooling excessively, or behaving strangely after any possible exposure to anti-inflammatory medication. Seek emergency veterinary care right away if you notice weakness or collapse, difficulty breathing, seizures, blood in vomit or diarrhoea, or an unusual colour in the gums or the whites of the eyes. With anti-inflammatory poisoning, time is critical—the sooner treatment begins, the better the chances of a full recovery.
