The Maybach GLS redefines the concept of automotive luxury, particularly for those who prefer to be chauffeured. This in-depth look focuses on the rear-seat experience, a domain where Maybach traditionally excels, and explores the meticulous details that set this ultra-luxury SUV apart. From the moment you open the rear door, you are enveloped in an atmosphere of opulence, designed for ultimate comfort and relaxation.
The Rear Cabin: A Sanctuary of Comfort
Upon entering the second row, passengers are greeted by two individual lounge-style seats, upholstered in a striking two-tone Nappa leather. While the specific color combination in this review might be considered bold, it harmonizes with the exterior’s aesthetic, featuring a maroon and tan hue for the seats against a creamy white backdrop. The luxury is palpable, extending to every surface, including leather-wrapped grab handles with exquisite stitching.
These recliners are separated by a central console that ingeniously houses a refrigerator. This particular specification also includes an optional champagne glass holder, subtly adorned with the Maybach logo. Beneath a well-padded armrest, occupants will find two fold-out tables. A sophisticated touchscreen tablet, removable from its casing, controls various cabin functions. Curiously, a floating wireless charger is positioned near the tablet, appearing slightly out of place in an otherwise seamless design. Additional amenities include a concealed cup holder and rear climate controls.
The door panels echo the dual-tone Nappa leather theme with contrasting stitching, complemented by a refined brown finish on the panel housing the seat controls. Even the metallic speaker grilles exude a sharp, high-quality feel. The illuminated Maybach sill serves as a welcoming threshold into the cabin. While some might deem the soft-close door feature superfluous, it guarantees a perfectly sealed door every time. The only aesthetic blemish noted was the white carpeting, which showed signs of wear by the time of the review, a minor point in an otherwise impeccable interior.
The Master Seat Experience
Settling into the rear seats, one immediately notices the comprehensive body support. The cushioning strikes a perfect balance—not too soft, not too firm—and the armrests are perfectly positioned. Passengers have the choice to either sit upright and engage with the outside world or recline and activate the heated massage function to leave the day’s stresses behind. Naturally, the massage feature was the first to be tested.
Control of the seat functions can be managed via the seat-back monitors, which respond to touch inputs, or through the aforementioned tablet. A variety of massage programs are available, including a full-back and a heated option. While enjoyable, the massage intensity does not quite match that of Scandinavian flagship vehicles. However, the heated backrest and armrest proved to be a welcome comfort on a cold, rainy day during the photoshoot.
Enhancing the comfort are the plush neck cushions and an ottoman. The ottoman can be fully extended, and when paired with the front seat moved to its furthest forward position, individuals of average height can find sufficient legroom to stretch out. Taller passengers, however, particularly those over six feet, might find the space slightly constrained for complete relaxation. Nevertheless, with substantial body support, a recline angle of up to 43 degrees, the open sunroof shade, and the massage function engaged, the rear-seat experience approaches unparalleled levels of luxury. It’s worth noting that the S-Class offers an even more refined experience in this regard.
All sunshades, including those for the windows and sunroof, are electronically controlled from the rear. Both the seats and the sunshades are heated and ventilated. The touchscreen also provides access to the infotainment system and ambient lighting controls. Reflecting Mercedes-Benz’s signature ambient lighting, the Maybach extends this feature not only to the front and sides but also to the rear of the cabin. The cabin insulation is another area where Mercedes-Benz has focused significant effort, effectively creating a serene environment insulated from external noise. Unless a vehicle directly beside you sounds its horn, occupants are unlikely to be disturbed.
The audio experience is delivered through a 13-speaker, 590-watt Burmester sound system. While impressive, it falls short of being the absolute best in the market. The system also includes a 2-way in-car communication feature, which amplifies voice for conversations across all rows without the need to raise one’s voice.
Despite the extensive comfort and technology, the overall luxury feel is perceived as slightly less opulent than anticipated. The seats, in particular, appear somewhat plain and could have benefited from quilted stitching for a more distinguished look. The chosen color scheme also strikes as a tad too vibrant for the typically understated elegance associated with Maybach. Opting for a monotone interior scheme is strongly recommended for a more classic aesthetic.
The Driver’s Perspective
While passengers luxuriate in the rear, the driver is not forgotten. The driver’s seat mirrors the rear in terms of comfort, featuring massage, heating, and cooling functions, all upholstered in premium leather. The steering wheel offers a satisfyingly premium tactile experience. Visibility is excellent; sitting tall, the driver can see the bonnet all the way to the hood ornament, offering a commanding view of the road. The dashboard is adorned with soft-touch materials, and the signature Mercedes dual-screen layout is presented with exceptional class, complemented by elegantly integrated air vents and a substantial center console. Even the details, such as the accelerator and brake pedals with their special Maybach inscription, underscore the meticulous attention paid to the driver’s environment.
Baggage Capacity
For individuals accustomed to the Maybach lifestyle, luggage is often a significant consideration. The GLS Maybach’s boot offers ample space for a couple of large suitcases and bags. It comes equipped with a substantial full-size spare wheel, which, despite its size, is a space-saver. The remaining space is occupied by the refrigerator, jack, and other essential accessories. This leaves limited room for additional items, such as laptop bags. Consequently, it’s common for GLS Maybachs to be accompanied by an escort of SUVs to accommodate security personnel and extensive luggage.
