Mark of Excellence Dance Competition 2026: Complete Rules and Regulations Guide

Introduction

Welcome to the Mark of Excellence National Talent Competition, a premier dance competition with over 40 years of experience in the dance competition industry. This comprehensive guide outlines all rules, regulations, and guidelines for the 2026 competition season. Whether you are a studio owner, director, choreographer, dancer, or family member, understanding these regulations is essential for a successful competition experience. From age divisions and levels of competition to time limits and award categories, this guide covers everything you need to know to prepare for a professionally-produced competition event.

Age Divisions

The competition organizes dancers into the following age divisions based on their age as of January 1, 2026:

DivisionAge Range
Mini5 and Under
Petite6-8 Years
Junior9-11 Years
Teen12-14 Years
Senior15-19 Years
Adult20+ Years

Important Note for Adult Division: Any routine with a performer age 20 or older will automatically compete in the Adult Division, regardless of the average age—even if there is only ONE dancer age 20 or over. Adult performances receive critiques and comments only, without eligibility for Top Ten awards or Excellence Rewards.

Levels of Competition

Mark of Excellence offers three levels of competition to ensure fair and appropriate placement for dancers at all skill levels. Studio Directors and teachers determine each dancer’s level based on their experience and training hours.

Level Guidelines

LevelCriteria
Beginner (Mark of the Future)Dances less than 2 hours per week with two years or less of structured dance classes
IntermediateThree or more years of structured dance classes; 3 to 5 hours of studio training per week
AdvancedThree or more years of structured dance classes; 6 or more hours of studio advanced training per week

Combining Levels in Group Routines

When dancers of different levels perform together, the group’s level is determined by a point system:

  • Beginner = 1 point per dancer
  • Intermediate = 3 points per dancer
  • Advanced = 6 points per dancer

The level with the highest total points determines the group’s competition level.

Example 1 (Small Group of 9 dancers):

  • 3 Beginner dancers = 3 points
  • 5 Intermediate dancers = 15 points
  • 1 Advanced dancer = 6 points
  • Total = Intermediate Level

Example 2 (Large Group of 18 dancers):

  • 14 Beginner dancers = 14 points
  • 2 Intermediate dancers = 6 points
  • 2 Advanced dancers = 12 points
  • Total = Beginner Level

Bump Rule

The average age of each act must not drop more than one age division below the age of the oldest dancer, regardless of the average age. For example, if an act averages in the Junior division but contains a Senior dancer (age 15-19), the act will compete in the Teen division. This rule does not apply to the Production category, which uses the average age only.
