Elvis Presley Reimagined: A Deepfake Spectacle on America’s Got Talent

The legendary King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis Presley, graced the stage once more during the America’s Got Talent (AGT) season finale, not in person, but as a remarkably lifelike deepfake double. The synthetic media developer Metaphysic, in collaboration with synthetic voice startup Respeecher, presented a digital Elvis performing alongside tribute singer Emilio Santoro. Respeecher, renowned for its work in de-aging and synthesizing voices for iconic characters like Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars universe, provided the vocal performance for this groundbreaking act.

The Synthetic King Takes the Stage

The performance began with a synthetic Elvis delivering a solo rendition of “Hound Dog.” The act quickly evolved as the digital King transitioned into “Devil in Disguise,” joined by virtual renditions of judges Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara providing backup vocals. The spectacle intensified with the appearance of a deepfake Simon Cowell, who engaged in a duet with the synthetic Elvis, much to the astonishment of his real-life counterpart. Cowell, recovering from his surprise, lauded Metaphysic’s performance as “the most incredible, original act we’ve ever had,” predicting a future Las Vegas show for the innovative act.

Metaphysic had previously captivated audiences and judges with its synthetic creations. During the semi-finals, a virtual Simon Cowell performed “Nessun Dorma” with digital versions of host Terry Crews and judge Howie Mandel. The initial audition featured a deepfake Cowell performing “You’re the Inspiration.” While the $1 million prize was a significant reward, the exposure gained from AGT is invaluable for Metaphysic, opening doors for potential collaborations with rights holders of music and images.

Voicebot founder Bret Kinsella commented on the potential of Metaphysic’s technology, suggesting that it could indeed form the basis of an entire Las Vegas show, catering to an audience that appreciates “vintage” acts from their youth, even those performers who have passed away. He posited that companies like Veritone or Lucasfilm might have previously acquired Metaphysic for a lower sum, but its current value and the demand for such innovative entertainment concepts have significantly increased. Beyond Vegas revues, Kinsella sees applications in television series, comedy specials, and feature films.

Heidi Klum, clearly impressed, even humorously suggested forming a real band with her fellow judges. Metaphysic ultimately secured fourth place in the competition.

A Glimpse into the Future of Entertainment

The collaboration between Metaphysic and Respeecher on America’s Got Talent highlights the rapidly advancing capabilities of synthetic media. This technology offers new avenues for creative expression and performance, allowing iconic figures to “return” to the stage or for new forms of entertainment to be conceived. As this technology matures, its impact on the entertainment industry is likely to grow, blurring the lines between the real and the virtual.

The potential for deepfake technology in entertainment is vast, ranging from reviving deceased performers to creating entirely new virtual characters. While ethical considerations and rights management are crucial aspects to address, the innovative use of synthetic media by Metaphysic and Respeecher suggests a future where digital resurrection and novel performances become increasingly commonplace.

The spectacle of a synthetic Elvis Presley performing on a major television show like AGT serves as a powerful testament to the current state and future trajectory of artificial intelligence in the creative arts. It invites audiences to reconsider the possibilities of performance and the enduring legacy of beloved artists.

The future of entertainment may well involve such technological marvels, offering audiences unique experiences that were once confined to the realm of science fiction.
