British television presenter Davina McCall has opened up about the fragile nature of physical health, declaring “it would be terrible” to suffer career-threatening injuries. The broadcaster made the candid revelation during an episode of her Making The Cut podcast, which she co-hosts with her husband, celebrity hairdresser Michael Douglas. The couple discussed their personal fitness journeys, the complexities of body awareness, and Davina’s recent string of severe health battles.
The conversation sparked from a minor domestic mishap when Davina admitted she had recently “twanged” her elbow after falling up the stairs at home. While the incident was minor for her, it led the couple to contemplate the severe stakes professional athletes and dancers face when dealing with physical trauma.
Body Awareness and Fitness Journeys
During the podcast episode, Michael Douglas expressed his desire to become more in tune with his own body and understand how it truly functions. He recounted an insightful anecdote from his time styling the hair of retired ballerina and former Strictly Come Dancing judge Darcey Bussell. Douglas recalled feeling envious when Bussell mentioned she intimately “knew her body,” noting that professional dancers are acutely familiar with “every single tendon and ligament.”
This reflection prompted Davina to consider the immense pressure placed on physical performers. “Imagine not being allowed to get injured,” she remarked. “The amount of time I spent slightly injured. Like, I fell up the stairs the other day, and I’ve twanged my elbow, and now, you know. Like, that ruins you if you’re a sportsperson or a ballet dancer or a dancer of any kind. It’d be terrible, that.”
Aside from injury prevention, the couple shared updates on their nutritional routines. Douglas revealed he has been paying closer attention to his dietary intake and physical reactions. He noted that the workout supplement creatine had yielded positive results, doing an “amazing job” for his physique after he previously found it difficult to build lean muscle mass.
Facing Back-to-Back Health Crises
Davina’s perspective on physical vulnerability comes amid her own highly publicized medical challenges. The presenter recently spoke with raw honesty about feeling like she had been “punched in the face by the universe” after facing a sequence of life-threatening diagnoses.
Approximately one year after undergoing a complex surgical procedure to remove a benign brain tumor, Davina was diagnosed with breast cancer, requiring further surgery.
Reflecting on her health trajectory during an appearance on Heart Breakfast with hosts Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden, Davina detailed the emotional toll of the past few years. The interview also touched upon a poignant moment between Davina and Theakston, who was treated for laryngeal cancer. Davina recalled a past incident where an aggressive friendly embrace accidentally hurt Theakston’s throat, ultimately leading to his medical examination and cancer discovery.
“We’ve been on quite a journey you and me,” Davina shared during the broadcast. “When I got you in that grip where it hurt your throat and you found out it was cancer, I carried that burden where I thought I’d hurt you for quite a long time.” Theakston, who announced he was cancer-free following his treatment, reassured her, stating, “If you hadn’t have done that, I never would have known.”
A Vital Message on Early Detection
Davina detailed the shocking timeline of her breast cancer diagnosis, emphasizing how quickly health circumstances can change. Her tumor was discovered just as she was regaining her strength following her brain surgery.
“It was just quite a difficult year,” Davina explained. “In October, interestingly two years almost to the month where I found out I had a brain tumor, I got breast cancer. I just thought what, I was just about beginning to feel like myself again, and I had a mammogram in the August and this was the October, and I found a lump.”
Using her platform to advocate for proactive healthcare, Davina urged listeners never to complacent about routine screenings. “Just don’t think, ‘Oh I had a mammogram recently, it can’t be that.’ It could be. So just check, if you’ve got something, go get it looked at. It takes seconds.”
