For over 15 years, dedicated therapy dog teams have brought invaluable comfort and cheer to patients, caregivers, and staff within healthcare settings. These specially trained canines and their handlers visit thousands of patients annually, offering a unique form of support that goes beyond traditional medical care. In recognition of their profound impact, the Caring Canines Program received the prestigious Schwarzman Animal Medical Center Top Dog Hero Award in 2023. The presence of these nurturing animals can significantly impact an individual’s well-being, fostering a sense of peace, reducing anxiety and distress, and providing crucial emotional support.
Interacting with a therapy dog can create a more comfortable environment for patients, making them feel more at ease when communicating with their healthcare teams. Furthermore, the companionship of a therapy animal can serve as a powerful distraction from pain, encouraging patients to focus on their recovery journey and increasing their motivation. The bond formed with these gentle creatures often proves to be a vital component in the healing process, demonstrating the powerful human-animal connection.
Our Caring Canines at Work
Extensive studies on animal-assisted therapy have confirmed that healthy, well-cared-for dogs pose no health risk to hospitalized patients. Our Caring Canine teams operate under stringent guidelines, with handlers meticulously following rigorous infection control procedures to ensure the safety of everyone involved. This commitment to safety allows the therapeutic benefits of the program to be fully realized.
Before joining our esteemed team, both handlers and dogs undergo a thorough evaluation. Handlers are interviewed to assess their suitability and commitment, while dogs are observed to ensure they possess the calm temperament and affectionate nature required for patient interaction. This careful selection process guarantees that each therapy dog is a perfect match for the sensitive environment of a healthcare facility. Volunteers must also be registered with a recognized therapy dog organization and complete specialized in-house training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), further underscoring the program’s dedication to excellence and safety.
Schedule a Visit With a Therapy Dog
Our dedicated therapy dog teams are available for in-person visits at various locations within healthcare facilities. You can find more information on scheduling a visit here. In addition to these in-person interactions, our teams also offer virtual visits for patients who are unable to have an in-person visit due to their condition or facility restrictions. This adaptability ensures that the benefits of animal-assisted therapy can reach a wider range of individuals.
