Welcoming a new furry friend into the family is an exciting time, and providing them with engaging toys is a top priority for any loving owner. However, the quest for a truly indestructible dog toy can often feel like an endless cycle of purchases, only to be met with the disheartening sight of chewed-up remnants. We understand this frustration intimately, having experienced it ourselves and with our extended family of dogs at Benafim Dog Shelter. That’s why we embarked on a mission to rigorously test a selection of toys marketed as “indestructible” to bring you honest, reliable feedback straight from the experts – our dogs. Expert Reviews from Benafim Shelter Dogs
Our team of canine connoisseurs, including Nero, Max, Maya, Black Nero, Jean, and Pebbles, put five popular toys to the ultimate test: the Nylabone Extreme Tough Dog Chew Toy, The Kong Rewards Ball, The CyunCmay Indestructible Dog Toy Bone, The Hetoo Indestructible Squeaky Dental Care Dog Toy, and The Kong Wobbler. These toys endured a week of intense chewing, fetching, burying, and general canine playtime. Their feedback, unfiltered and to the point, is invaluable for anyone seeking durable and entertaining options.
Nylabone Extreme Tough Dog Chew Toy
The Nylabone Extreme Tough Dog Chew Toy, in a Bison flavor, is specifically designed for powerful chewers and dogs over 23kg. Nero, a 9-year-old Pitt bull, spent hours with this toy, leaving barely a mark. Its size is substantial yet light enough for dogs to carry, and the curved design makes it easy to grip. Maya, a formerly abandoned dog who is still learning to play, took to the Nylabone immediately, finding joy in chewing and carrying it.
Black Nero, known for his destructive chewing habits, even with strong fencing material, proved no match for this Nylabone. After extensive chewing, the toy remained remarkably intact, showcasing its exceptional durability. The flavor is infused throughout, and raised textures help clean teeth and gums. This toy is easy to clean and maintains its appeal without any unpleasant odors, making it a top recommendation from our shelter dogs for those seeking a truly robust chewing experience.
The Details:
- Measurements: 30.48 x 13.97 x 5.08 cm
- Weight: 485 grams
- Designed for: Dogs over 23 kg
- Flavors available: Bison, chicken, turkey
Summary: Our dogs unanimously recommend the Nylabone Extreme Tough Dog Chew Toy. It’s an ideal choice for dogs that love to chew, get bored easily, and require a tasty, durable toy to satisfy their urges.
Kong Rewards Ball
The Kong Rewards Ball initially met with mild curiosity, but its appeal quickly grew. This clever toy combines playtime with a treat dispenser, proving easy for humans to fill and for dogs to figure out. While the dogs enjoyed the bouncy, soft rubber exterior, the treat-dispensing aspect was also a hit. Jean particularly loved this toy, spending hours chewing and burying it, much to the dismay of his friend Komo.
Across all our resident dogs, from the largest to the smallest, the Kong Rewards Ball held up remarkably well, with no visible tooth marks. It functions effectively as a simple and engaging treat dispenser, combining two of a dog’s favorite activities: play and food. This toy offers durability and interactive fun, making it a well-rounded choice.
The Details:
- Measurements: 12.7 x 12.7 x 12.07 cm
- Weight: 417 grams
- Designed for: Dogs weighing 16 kg and above
Summary: The Kong Rewards Ball is a highly recommended toy that successfully merges play and reward. Its durability against chewing and interactive nature make it a standout option for keeping dogs entertained.
CyunCmay Indestructible Dog Toy XL Bone
The CyunCmay Indestructible Dog Toy XL Bone generated significant initial excitement. Its soft, rubbery, and pliable texture, however, proved to be its downfall when faced with powerful chewers like Black Nero. Within approximately 30 minutes, the toy showed significant teeth marks and was nearly split in two. Despite its failure to withstand intense chewing, the toy’s handles made it popular for games of tug-of-war and fetching, particularly from water.
While the CyunCmay bone is described as strong and durable, our testing revealed it is not suitable for dogs with extreme chewing habits. Nevertheless, it provided a short period of fun and engagement for retrieval and play for many of our dogs. If you’re looking for a fun fetch toy rather than a long-lasting chew toy, this might be an option, but be prepared for a short lifespan with aggressive chewers.
The Details:
- Measurements: 32.9 x 12.2 x 3.8 cm
- Weight: 330 grams
- Material: TPR environmentally friendly, non-toxic
Summary: While fun for retrieval and short play sessions, the CyunCmay Indestructible Dog Toy XL Bone does not live up to its “indestructible” claim for powerful chewers.
HETOO Indestructible Squeaky Dental Care Dog Toy
The HETOO Indestructible Squeaky Dental Care Dog Toy was met with a notably unenthusiastic response from our canine testers. Even the squeaking feature failed to elicit much excitement, with Maya initially hiding from the noise. To encourage interaction, peanut butter was added to the grooves, which briefly held Maya’s attention before she lost interest.
Only Black Nero and Maya showed any interest in this toy, and even that was very short-lived. Despite its design for dental cleaning, the HETOO toy did not engage our dogs for more than a few minutes. Based on our dogs’ reactions, this toy is unlikely to provide lasting entertainment or fulfill its intended purpose for extended periods.
The Details:
- Measurements: 12.7 x 12.7 x 12.07 cm
- Weight: 417 grams
- Material: Natural rubber
Summary: The HETOO Indestructible Squeaky Dental Care Dog Toy failed to capture the attention of our dogs, offering only brief moments of interaction.
Kong Wobbler Interactive Treat Dispensing Dog Toy
The Kong Wobbler presented an initial comical mystery to our dogs due to its size and shape. Made from a harder plastic polymer rather than rubber, this large treat-dispensing toy requires use on smooth surfaces and the correct treat size to function optimally. Our dogs initially struggled to access the treats, and we realized the importance of the surface and treat compatibility.
Once the correct conditions were met, the Kong Wobbler became a hit. Its substantial size makes it difficult for dogs to get their teeth into, significantly reducing the risk of destruction. Our dogs confirmed its durability, and once they understood how it worked, they found it easy and rewarding to use. For optimal treat distribution, ensure the treat size is appropriate for the dispensing hole.
The Details:
- Measurements: Diameter 13 x 19 cm
- Weight: 485 grams
- Designed for: Dogs weighing 12 kg plus
- Maximum Filling Capacity: 250 grams
Summary: The Kong Wobbler proved to be an indestructible and highly engaging interactive toy once its usage requirements were understood. Its size and design contribute to its durability and effectiveness in dispensing treats.
