Drew Barrymore recently shared a heartfelt tribute to her late father, actor John Barrymore, offering a candid look into her unconventional childhood and complicated relationship with him. The 45-year-old actress described her father as a “mad poet hedonist man child,” yet expressed a surprising lack of “baggage or dad issues” stemming from his unconventional nature.

In an Instagram post on Father’s Day 2020, Barrymore posted a throwback photo of her parents, John and Jaid Barrymore, from before her birth. She acknowledged her father’s wild spirit, stating, “His wildness runs through me. His gifts are here. His demons to overcome are mine to break!” While she admitted to a childhood wish for a more conventional father who might have stayed in her life, she ultimately embraced him for who he was, recognizing that she, too, might not have always fit the mold.

Barrymore has been open about her own struggles with drug abuse as a teenager and her complex relationship with her mother. Now a mother of two herself, to daughters Olive, 7, and Frankie, 5, she finds profound lessons in her parents’ influences on her own parenting style. She stated that while her parents’ lives were far from perfect, her own family functions with “so much love. And togetherness. And availability.”

She concluded her tribute by emphasizing the unique value of her story and her father’s legacy. “I don’t have a picture of a dad today to show how great everything was. I have a picture to show what it was. And that is my story. And that is perfect in itself,” she reflected. Barrymore cherishes the gifts her father bestowed upon her: “My dad gave me the gift of life! A wicked sense of humor! And that wildness that I truly do cherish.”
