Understanding the Autodesk Expert Elite Program: More Than Just a Jacket

The Autodesk Expert Elite (EE) program represents a significant commitment within the Design & Make industries, extending far beyond the superficial perceptions of forum participation and branded apparel. As an ambassador for Autodesk, Expert Elites embody the company’s ethos and contribute unparalleled expertise to its world-class presence. From the foundational AutoCAD, now over four decades old, to modern cloud-based solutions like Fusion and Forma, with stalwarts such as Revit and Inventor in between, the collective experience of Expert Elites is truly exceptional. They are the vanguard of the CAD and BIM sectors, offering high-level consultancy, instructing at Autodesk Authorized Training Centers (ATCs), and providing crucial support at events like Autodesk University’s Answer Bar. Essentially, Expert Elites serve as an extension of Autodesk, delivering indispensable services to all Autodesk users.

This role, however, transcends mere technical support. For many, being an EE is about active community engagement and advocacy. While the perks, such as the distinctive EE jackets, are appreciated, the core of the program lies in a deeper commitment to the Autodesk community. This was recently demonstrated through participation in key events that highlight the volunteer spirit integral to the EE program.

Recent Engagements: Fostering Community and Sharing Expertise

The past month has been particularly active, marked by representation of the EE program at two significant events. These engagements underscore the program’s dedication to fostering user communities and facilitating knowledge exchange.

First AutoCAD User Group (AUG) Meetup in London – April 23, 2025

The inaugural AutoCAD User Group (AUG) meetup in London, UK, was held at the Autodesk office on April 23rd. This event, made possible by Autodesk’s provision of a meeting space, proved to be a successful gathering. As the Autodesk Group Leader for AUG, close collaboration with Autodesk ensured the event’s smooth execution. The afternoon featured a presentation on AutoCAD 2026 by the author, followed by an insightful session from Oli Cooper of OCTheatrical. Cooper shared his workflow, detailing how he utilizes AutoCAD to design stages for major London theatre productions. Situated in the heart of London’s vibrant theatre district, the Autodesk office provided an fitting backdrop for this face-to-face AUG meetup.

During the meetup, attendee Sarah Medley was the fortunate winner of a copy of the author’s recently published book, “Mastering AutoCAD,” released by Packt in January.

A special offer provides a 20% discount on the book’s list price via Amazon, accessible through this link: https://packt.link/7mnNb. The meetup concluded with informal discussions over pizza and refreshments, allowing attendees to share their career journeys and practical applications of AutoCAD in their daily work. For those interested in joining, the AutoCAD User Group (AUG) can be found on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/groups/13741031/ and on Meetup.com at https://www.meetup.com/autocad-user-group-aug/.

AUGICON25 – May 1-2, 2025

The AUGI (Autodesk User Group International) holds a special significance, having served on its Board of Directors from 2010 to 2016. This volunteer role involved supporting AUGI at Autodesk University and acting as a liaison between AUGI and Local User Groups (LUGs) globally. This period was highly rewarding, and AUGI’s core principle of “users helping users” resonates deeply with the author’s personal ethos as an EE. The commitment to assisting fellow users remains strong, with the EE role serving as a powerful platform for this endeavor. Teaching an AutoCAD class at AUGICON25 was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, and the AUGICON Conference Lounge provided an excellent venue for reconnecting with numerous friends, colleagues, and new acquaintances.

The AUGICON25 class was inspired by a recent AU2024 class held in San Diego. Details of the AU2024 class can be found on the Autodesk University webpage: https://www.autodesk.com/autodesk-university/class/Those-AutoCAD-Tools-You-Were-Never-Told-About-2024. Classes from AUGICON25 will soon be available, and individuals can join AUGI at www.augi.com. The comprehensive nature of such user groups and conferences emphasizes the importance of readily available resources and support for AutoCAD users, highlighting the value of platforms that facilitate the sharing of knowledge and best practices.

The Evolution of Expertise and Community Contribution

With a history involving AutoCAD since 1988 and Revit since approximately 2002, the transformative evolution of these products over the years is undeniable. Becoming an Expert Elite in 2017 marked a pivotal moment, significantly enhancing the author’s career trajectory and instilling the confidence to become a catalyst for change within their professional sphere.

The launch of the Not Just CAD podcast is a testament to this drive, serving as a platform to showcase the remarkable individuals within the Design & Make industries. Listeners can access the Not Just CAD podcast here. The profound impact of AutoCAD on the author’s career and personal satisfaction since 1988 is a driving force. This dedication is further amplified through roles as an Autodesk Certified Instructor (ACI) and LinkedIn Learning instructor, enabling the dissemination of extensive experience and expertise. The Expert Elite designation elevates this contribution to the industry to an even higher level.

For those seeking to expand their AutoCAD proficiency, courses are available in the LinkedIn Learning library.
